Hybrid Thermal Energy Systems

Greenco Tech hybrid thermal energy systems R&D concept showing thermal energy storage, heat pump and battery storage integrating solar, grid electricity and recovered heat for commercial and industrial applications

Hybrid Thermal Energy Systems R&D

Developing and validating the foundations for flexible multi-energy systems

Greenco Tech develops the thermal, control and integration technologies needed to test how heat, electricity, storage and flexible loads can work together in real energy systems.

The programme originated within Greenco Tech as a modular energy-hub R&D concept and is coordinated by Greenco during technology development, prototyping and validation. The resulting system architecture now forms the technical foundation for EnerVectum AB’s whole-site commercial pathway.

Greenco Tech remains the technology originator and R&D coordination platform. EnerVectum AB carries the customer-facing venture pathway for integrated site energy solutions, while ThermoReserve AB provides the dedicated thermal energy storage product layer where appropriate.

Research challenge

Future energy systems require coordinated thermal and electrical flexibility

Buildings and industrial sites increasingly combine renewable electricity, thermal demand, electric mobility, heat pumps, storage and other flexible loads. These assets operate on different timescales and with different physical constraints. Greenco’s R&D focuses on understanding the technical interfaces between them before broader commercial deployment.

The goal is not simply to add more equipment. It is to understand how thermal assets, controls, recovered heat and electrical flexibility can be combined, measured and validated as one coherent energy system.

Technical focus

Core areas of investigation

Thermal systems

Thermal storage integration

Charging and discharging interfaces, heat-transfer pathways, temperature levels, thermal containment and useful heat delivery.

Heat transfer

Heat exchangers & thermal interfaces

Coupling storage, recovered heat, heat pumps and building or industrial thermal loops through practical heat-transfer hardware and control logic.

Conversion

Heat pumps & heat recovery

Evaluating how heat upgrading, waste-heat recovery and thermal cascades can increase the usefulness of available energy.

Controls

Sensing, control & data acquisition

Instrumentation, control interfaces, communication layers and data collection needed to understand system behaviour and verify performance.

Architecture

Multi-asset system integration

Testing how thermal technologies interact with PV, BESS, EV charging, heat pumps, grid signals and flexible site loads, creating validated architectures that can later be deployed through EnerVectum.

Validation

Simulation & real-world verification

Combining modelling, CFD, prototype testing and operational data to de-risk technical decisions before transfer into product or customer deployment pathways.

Development logic

From concept to validated system architecture

The platform follows the same evidence-driven development logic used across Greenco Tech’s wider R&D portfolio.

1. Model

Define loads, thermal behaviour, control objectives and system boundaries.

2. Prototype

Build testable subsystems, interfaces, instrumentation and control hardware.

3. Test

Measure performance, limitations, transients and interactions between assets.

4. Validate

Verify technical operation and integration in increasingly realistic environments.

5. Transfer

Move validated technology, architecture and learning into the right commercial pathway.

What the R&D is intended to prove

Technical evidence before commercial scaling

The programme is designed to establish whether integrated thermal systems can deliver measurable flexibility and operational value under real constraints.

Thermal performance

Useful capacity, charge/discharge behaviour, temperature control and losses.

System interaction

How thermal and electrical assets influence each other under changing demand.

Control readiness

Whether instrumentation, communications and control layers are robust enough for deployment.

Replication logic

Which architectures and interfaces can be standardised for future applications.

Validation environments

Real sites are used to test engineering assumptions

Initial validation work is particularly relevant to commercial properties and other sites where thermal demand, renewable electricity, flexible electrical loads and real operating constraints can be observed together.

The purpose of these environments is technical validation and learning. A Greenco pilot should therefore generate evidence that can be reused in later product, project and venture development.

From R&D to venture

The whole-site energy-hub pathway is being carried forward through EnerVectum

Greenco Tech originated the underlying hybrid thermal-system concept and continues to coordinate R&D, prototype development and validation. EnerVectum AB is the dedicated venture for turning validated system architecture into customer-facing, whole-site energy solutions.

EnerVectum AB

Carries the whole-site commercial pathway for modular energy solutions combining heating, cooling, electricity, storage, shifting, controls and multi-asset integration. EnerVectum is the natural commercial home for the energy-hub architecture developed and validated through Greenco R&D.

ThermoReserve AB

Provides the dedicated thermal energy storage product pathway and thermal subsystems that can be integrated into EnerVectum solutions when TES strengthens the site-level energy case.

Visit ThermoReserve
The role boundary is deliberate: Greenco creates and validates the technical foundations, EnerVectum integrates them into whole-site commercial solutions, and ThermoReserve develops the dedicated TES product layer.
