Thermal Energy Storage R&D
From Greenco R&D to ThermoReserve
Greenco Tech originated and developed the underlying thermal energy storage technology. The dedicated product and commercial pathway is now being advanced through ThermoReserve AB.
The technology has progressed through modelling, thermal and mechanical engineering, prototype development, heat-transfer design, instrumentation, testing and system integration. Greenco continues to support ThermoReserve through R&D, validation and development of future technology generations.
Technology origin
Why Greenco began developing thermal energy storage
A central R&D question for Greenco has been how to store large amounts of energy economically as useful heat, using robust materials and modular architectures that can support buildings, industry and future hybrid thermal systems.
The work has focused on reducing technical uncertainty around storage media, temperature range, heat transfer, insulation, containment, charging and discharging, sensing and integration with downstream thermal systems.
What Greenco developed
Building the technical foundations of the storage platform
Storage media & operating window
Evaluation of high-temperature storage concepts, material behaviour, usable energy density and practical operating ranges.
Charging & discharging pathways
Development of heat-transfer concepts, air and fluid interfaces, internal flow paths and thermal extraction strategies.
Containment & insulation
Engineering of thermal containment, structural integration, insulation packages and external temperature management.
Sensing & instrumentation
Temperature measurement, control architecture, data acquisition and operating logic used to understand system behaviour during testing.
Simulation & system analysis
Thermal calculations, CFD, component sizing and system models used to guide prototype decisions and identify performance limits.
Prototype development & testing
Construction and testing of progressively more representative hardware to validate the architecture and create evidence for later productisation.
Development journey
From concept to product pathway
The TES programme has evolved through the same evidence-driven development logic used across Greenco Tech’s wider R&D portfolio.
Define the thermal challenge, architecture and target operating conditions.
Analyse storage behaviour, heat transfer, losses and expected system performance.
Build testable thermal modules, interfaces, controls and instrumentation.
Measure real behaviour and progressively test the technology in relevant environments.
Transfer validated technology and know-how into a dedicated commercial pathway.
Evidence before claims
What the R&D programme is intended to validate
Greenco’s approach is to distinguish between measured evidence, engineering targets and longer-term design ambition. Product specifications should therefore be confirmed only when supported by the relevant test data and commercial configuration.
Usable capacity, charging and discharging behaviour, temperature distribution and heat-loss characteristics.
Containment, insulation, component interfaces and practical operation across the intended temperature range.
How the storage system interacts with heat exchangers, controls, heating systems, heat recovery and wider energy-system components.
